ABOUT
Founded in 2010, the Big Backyard 5K, also known as the BBY5K, is a community-run/walk
showcasing King County Parks regional trails. Proceeds from the BBY5K benefit King County Parks, supporting maintenance and operations of facilities and recreational resources. With your help over the years, we have raised more than $250,000!

The 2021 Big Backyard 5K Festival takes place on three Sundays in June showcasing three different regional trails in Your Big Backyard. Or you can join us virtually in your neighborhood, on the trail, or on a treadmill to support King County Parks!

Select a location, date, and your preferred START Time. Be aware that we offer START times beginning at 8:00 a.m. and we will fill earliest time slots first. Remember, space is limited at the LIVE Events with a maximum of 300 per day. Start times are staggered so we can maintain safe physical distancing, so grab your spot on the START Line NOW!
VIRTUAL 5K RUN-WALK
Presented by Kaiser Permanente
We are thrilled to have Kaiser Permanente supporting the Virtual BBY 5K to provide more safe opportunities for participation. Run your 5K virtually from anywhere! You will be emailed a link to report your time when you sign up. Submit your results to us anytime between June 6 to 20. Apps such as Strava, Garmin, MapMyRun, etc. are appreciated, but we will also take your word for it in support of King County Parks.
TEAMS
Sign up with your friends and running buddies (LIVE or Virtually)! We will take the combined time of your Fastest 5 finishers from any LIVE Event or Virtually to calculate Team Awards. Sign-up as many team members as you want and improve your odds of winning. Run any event you want. We will
calculate results after all three LIVE Events have been held. Ask your Team Captain to fill out your Team Name. Individual members will select your Team Name from the Pull-Down Menu in the Team Registration field.

DAY OF THE EVENTS
START WAVES: 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM EACH SUNDAY

Review the route in advance, and know the course!

Remain socially distanced as you approach the Check-In Tent.

Listen for instructions. Only enter the START Corral when directed.
KEY INFORMATION
-
All Registration is Online in advance. There is NO Race Day Registration!
-
Arrive with enough time to pick up your packet, warm-up, put your extra gear in your vehicle (30 minutes max.), and get to the START at your designated time.

The number of people at the START is limited per State; County COVID-19 Guidance.
-
You must wear your mask from the moment you arrive, through Check-in, until after you have cleared the START corral.
-
You do not need to wear your mask when you run/walk, but you must have one available to use if you cannot maintain a 6ft physical distance from other participants on the trail.

ï‚· Run/walk your 5K. We will have volunteers at key locations on the route. Please review the course in advance.

The route will be clearly marked including turns and Mile marks.

Wait for vehicles on any road crossings. Vehicles have the right of way.
-
Be careful around parking lots, and always be on the lookout for vehicles.

After you Finish, we request that you head quickly back to your vehicle and on to your celebration safely at another location. There is no lingering, hanging out, or spectating. We wish we could all share the fun, and high-fives, and stories. But, we need to wait for that time when we can all gather to celebrate together in person again.

LIVE EVENT COVID GUIDELINES

Per State and County Health Guidelines, we are limited to 300 participants, and have a fixed amount of time to host our LIVE events. Participants are requested to limit their time on-premise, arrive shortly before your START, and leave quickly to celebrate safely after you FINISH.

ï‚·Facemasks are required around the venue, during Check-In, in the START Corral, and immediately after you FINISH.

We will have sanitizer available by the portable restrooms.
-
Please bring your own water and supplies for your Pre-race and on-course needs. We will have individually packaged water available for pickup as you exit the Finish Chutes.

Overall Top Male and Female runners – Fastest Overall from all combined Live BBY5Ks (Based on all LIVE times recorded).
Top Male and Female Virtual runners – Fastest Overall from all Virtual BBY5Ks (Based on all Virtual times submitted).
Weekly Top Male and Female runners – Fastest Overall Live BBY5K Finishers Each week.
Fastest Boy/Girl (14 & Under) – Each week from Live Events (based on weekly LIVE results).
Top Teams – Combined times of Fastest 5 runners from any Team. Team times may include LIVE Results, Virtual Results, and even Second Chance Results.
ROUTE DESCRIPTIONS:
JUNE 6 - KING COUNTY’S MARYMOOR PARK BBY5K
FREE Parking in gravel Triangle Lot by Climbing Rock.
Check-In / START at the Event Recreation Area next to the Velodrome.
Head South from the START.
Turn Right (W/B) on the narrow trail that passes soccer fields, playground, tennis courts and baseball.
Turn Left from Fields Trail to Connector Trail at west end of the park. Do Not Cross the Sammamish
River.
Head E/B on the Marymoor Connector Trail. Mile 1 is just east of K-Lot (soccer parking).
Continue E/B on the Marymoor Connector Trail past the START. Stay Right on Trail!
Cross Marymoor Way at the Remote Control (RC) Airfield.
CAUTION! Watch for vehicles when crossing Marymoor Way. Stay Right!
Continue E/B across the Marsh Bridge. Mile 2 is just before the bridge. Stay Right!
U-Turn is marked before you reach the East Lake Sammamish Trail and Kiosk. Turn around. Head
W/B. Stay Right!
Continue W/B across the Marsh Bridge. Stay Right!
Continue W/B on the Marymoor Connector Trail past the RC Field. Stay Right! CAUTION! Road
Crossing!
Turn Right into the FINISH via the service road to the west of I-Lot!
JUNE 13 - TOLT MACDONALD PARK & SNOQUALMIE VALLEY TRAIL BBY5K
Check-In / START in the parking lot south of NE 40th .
START S/B from the S/W corner of the parking lot. Head S/B past Little League Fields. Stay Right!!
Continue E/B through the small parking lot, under SR203 Bridge along Tolt River. Stay Right!!
Follow gravel trail along Tolt River E/B.
Turn left N/B on Snoqualmie Valley Trail towards Nick Loutsis Park. Stay Right!!
U-Turn just before Loutsis parking.
Follow the route back to Tolt MacDonald Park. Please look for runners going both directions on narrow
trail.
CAUTION! Be aware of potential congestion as you pass the START Line to the FINISH.
JUNE 20 - GREEN to CEDAR RIVER TRAIL via LAKE WILDERNESS PARK BBY5K
Ample parking is available at Lake Wilderness Park.
Check-In / START near Lodge & Arboretum on the northeast part of the park.
Head North, then East along the Arboretum Trail to the Green to Cedar River Trail. Stay Right!
Turn Right S/B on the Green to Cedar River Trail. Stay Right!
U-turn before gate and Kent-Kangley Road.
Follow the same route back to FINISH.
Grab some water and go celebrate (safely) at another location!
